Chances are that you'll do more damage with FW than your enemy. Wasting one slot to increase your refire rate is always worth it....

1) You can't use Read the wind with Barrage
|
So you're throwing out a bow type and a skill just because they're incompatible with some worthless elite?
If you need something to hit, you use a Recurve. And you obviously do so why are you screwing around with Longbows? They are maybe 20% more likely to hit a moving target a range than a Flatbow, which is really quite pathetic if you need that first hit to connect.

2) Favorable Winds affect enemy and take 1 slot

If you're running multiple Rangers then it will be more beneficial to you than to the enemy; also only one person needs it. Of course you don't use it as a lone Ranger...

3) Longbow arc size 0.59 Flatbow 0.88 it isn't exactly "nearly"

My point being that at a 0.59s flight time you're still not going to hit anything moving at range reliably, so meh.
And Longbows cannot interrupt 1s casts without random button mashing so meh.

Nundak's recurve bow. I like [skill]poison arrow[/skill] a bit too much, and love the Dead Bow skin.

Gotta be a flatbow for pve, monsters arent profesional kiters and even so RtW negates any side effects of a flatbow making it the fastest firing n best range bow for PvE. (Torment and Dragos ftw).
For PvP i would say a recurve , great for interupting and a higher 'accuracy', if your arrows arent hitting, you aint doing any damage :P. And obv a hornbow for spiking and a shortbow if you wna spread conditions.

Barrage worthless elite?
Different point of view
Imho the malus of arc size is major of benefit gain from fast refire rate
In any case Recurve FTW

Recurve for PvP and any build that requires a preparation other than Read the Wind.
Flatbow for every other build that I can use with Read the Wind.
Longbow if I'm running Splinter Barrage (my one excuse to pull out mah lovely Zodiac bow).
As for the Longbow - Flatbow debate, I've gotta say, Longbows just don't cut it when you're using Read the Wind. The only thing Longbows have on the Flatbow is flight time, so it is quite obvious that when you negate that advantage, it loses statistically to the Flatbow. It's really a shame that all the good bow skins are Longbows. Whereas a Warrior isn't penalized by using a sexy looking sword over a crappy looking collector one, us Rangers don't really have much of a choice.
The GW:EN weapon crafters and BMP weapons are a step in the right direction, though.

It used to be flatbows, but I don't use RTW or FW very often any more. Currently it's my Undead Recurve bow. But I also like my mursaat, eternal and tormented recurves. Storm is still my fav long for pulling/looks.

also is the longbow better than recurve because as a ranger it is important to lure the creatures a bit at a time and the longbow gives that added space and keeps you out of troble. I know one can switch to recurve but that may be troublesome in the middle of battle.

It's quite hard to interrupt with longbow flight time and switching is only One button

Wow excuse me...
How about shoot the mob you want to pull with a Longbow/Flatbow and then run back and switch to a Recurve??
Yet another example of why I never take a PuG ranger...
And Flatbow is better for pulling because it gives you more time to get back, you know...
Also Rangers shouldn't be pulling, your Warrior or Dervish should be doing that since they're on the frontlines.
